Overview

SmartDish™ plates enable accurate and reproducible hematopoietic colony counting by preventing the formation of a meniscus. This allows for an even distribution of culture medium, resulting in a more uniform distribution of colonies throughout the entire 35 mm well. The absence of the meniscus also reduces optical distortion so that colonies located at the edge can be more easily counted.

SmartDish™ (Catalog #27370) is the second generation of the original SmartDish™ plate (Catalog #27301). These new plates use an improved coating, which streamlines the manufacturing process while consistently improving the visibility of hematopoietic colonies in culture through elimination of the mensicus. Current SmartDish™ customers can contact their local STEMCELL representative for more information.

SmartDish™ has been designed for both manual counting with STEMgrid™-6 as well as automated colony counting with a STEMvision™ instrument.

Manual and Automated Counting of Hematopoietic CFU Assays

Figure 1. Manual and Automated Counting of CFU Assays in Standard and SmartDish™ Culture Plates

Shown are representative 35 mm wells from (A) standard and (B) SmartDish™ culture plates with STEMgrid-6 attached to facilitate colony counting on an inverted microscope, or (C) standard and (D) SmartDish™ plates imaged using STEMvision™. Optical distortion caused by the meniscus obscures colonies at the edge of cultures grown in standard plates (A, C) and makes them more difficult to count (see circled colony in A). Colonies are more easily seen and counted at the edge of the SmartDish™ wells which have been treated to eliminate meniscus formation (B, D).
