Gastrointestinal Organoid Systems: Complex In Vitro Models for Drug Toxicity Testing
Discover how advanced gastrointestinal organoid models are transforming drug toxicity testing in this webinar hosted on April 8, 2026.
Key topics:
- How intestinal & hepatic organoid culture workflows support predictive preclinical decision-making
- Intestinal barrier integrity (TEER), permeability & gut transporter activity for absorption profiling
- Hepatic CYP450 induction & liver toxicity endpoints

In this webinar, Riya Sharma explores how human intestinal and hepatic organoid models can be applied to tissue-specific toxicity testing throughout the drug discovery process. She demonstrates how standardized, bankable organoid culture systems enable reproducible assays for intestinal permeability, efflux transporter activity (e.g. P-gp), enzyme induction, and hepatocyte toxicity while highlighting standardized culture tools that simplify 3D assay workflows. Through practical application examples, she illustrates how advanced organoid systems can improve the prediction of human safety outcomes and support more informed preclinical decision-making.
Key Topics:
- Applying intestinal and hepatic organoids to tissue-specific toxicity testing
- Measuring barrier function, permeability, viability, and transporter activity in intestinal models
- Evaluating hepatic drug metabolism and liver toxicity endpoints, including cholestatic liability
- Improving predictive toxicology with physiologically relevant human organoid systems
- Simplifying organoid culture, imaging, and high-content workflows with new culture tools
Speaker Biography
Riya Sharma, BSc
Senior Scientist, Liver Biology, STEMCELL Technologies
Riya Sharma is a Senior Scientist in Research and Development at STEMCELL Technologies. She leads a team developing products and workflows to support liver research using tissue- and human pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatic cells and organoids. Riya completed her BSc in Biotechnology at the University of British Columbia. Before joining STEMCELL Technologies in 2016, she held research positions in Dr. Alex Scott's lab, where she developed tendon injury models, and in Dr. Paul Rennie's lab, where she screened small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer.
