Serum-Free Media. The ability to maintain, expand and assay hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors in vitro has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of hematopoiesis. Historically, medium containing fetal bovine serum (FBS) has been used for culture of hematopoietic cells. However, the concentrations of inhibitors including transforming growth factor-á and other constituents vary between batches of sera. In order to minimize these variables, particularly for studies of the effects of specific regulatory or growth factors, there has been a move towards the use of serum-free media.

StemCell Technologies is a leading supplier of serum substitutes and serum-free media that support the maintenance and expansion of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors. We offer a range of products that includes StemSpan® SFEM and StemSpan® H3000, our new animal-free medium containing only human-derived or recombinant human proteins.

Sera. The fetal bovine sera and horse sera used in our culture media are rigorously screened and selected for specific applications. Selection and validation of sera and other components used for in vitro hematopoietic colony assays and long-term cultures are key factors of all our culture reagents. This allows investigators to take advantage of our extensive experience when preparing their own media formulations. StemCell Technologies extensively screens lots of the highest quality fetal bovine and horse sera. Sera is collected according to standards of United States Department of Agriculture.
