Human BAFF (B cell activating factor) is a ligand in the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) family, and is also known as human B Lymphocyte Stimulator (BLyS). It binds to a number of receptors including the BAFF receptor, BCMA and TACI, the latter two which are shared with another ligand known as APRIL. It is known as a co-stimulator of B cell proliferation and has been described together with APRIL as important for the proliferation of human embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Recombinant human BAFF is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 153 amino acids with a molecular weight of 17.007 kDa.
