CD56 is an isoform of the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule (NCAM) and is a marker of human NK cells. CD56 expression increases upon NK cell activation. CD56 is also expressed on a subset of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood and on adult neural cells and during embryogenesis.
