Human CD14 is expressed on cells of the myelomonocytic lineage, including monocytes, macrophages and Langerhans cells. CD14 is expressed at lower levels on neutrophils, making CD14 useful marker to distinguish monocytes/macrophages from neutrophils. However, CD14 expression on neutrophils can be increased after exposure to certain cytokines or other stimuli. Dendritic cell differentiation is accompanied with loss of CD14 expression, making CD14 a useful marker to monitor monocyte to dendritic cell differentiation in culture.
