CD54 (ICAM-1) is a 95 kDa member of the Ig superfamily. It is expressed by lymphocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells, as well as by vascular endothelium and high endothelial venules. ICAM-1 is an important intercellular adhesion molecule that contributes to T-cell/T-cell, T-cell/B-cell and T-cell/target cell interactions via binding of LFA-1 and Mac-1 (CD11a/CD18 and CD11b/CD18 complexes, respectively) and participates in lymphocyte tracking and T-cell signal transduction events. It is also the receptor for the major group of rhinoviruses. The YN1/1.7.4 monoclonal antibody efficiently blocks the binding of ICAM-1 to LFA-1 and Mac-1 and inhibits ICAM-1 mediated functions including cell-cell adhesion, antigen presentation to T-cells and leukocyte migration to inflammatory tissues.
