Activin A is a cytokine belonging to the Transforming Growth Factor Beta superfamily. It shares receptors with another ligand known as Nodal and activates the same downstream SMAD pathway as TGF-β. It has diverse roles in in the specification of cell fates, driving mesoderm induction, regulating the differentiation of many cell types including hematopoietic and neural cells.
