Detection

ALDH
Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) has been reported to be a marker of normal and cancerous mammary precursor cells as well as a strong predictor of breast cancer patient outcome. Detect primitive mammary cells and breast cancer stem cells based on their ALDH expression levels using ALDEFLUOR™.

Identification

Mammary Detection
Mammary epithelial cells can also be evaluated using a range of detection antibodies. Engrafted mouse mammary glands obtained in the mammary repopulating unit in vivo assay can be better evaluated after preservation with Carnoy fixative and staining with Carmine Alum.

EasySep™ is a fast and easy immunomagnetic cel separation platform that can isolate human or mouse mammary epithelial cells based on cell surface marker expression. For the antibody-free isolation of mammary cells based on aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) expression levels, use ALDEFLUOR™ instead.

Mammary cell culture
Use the fully defined MammoCult™ and EpiCult™ mammary cell culture media for more reproducible experimental results. MammoCult™ is the only commercially available medium for human mammosphere or tumorsphere culture. EpiCult™ provides species-specific formulations for the culture and assay of either human or mouse mammary cells.

Assay

Assay
Fully defined EpiCult™-B provides species-specific human and mouse formulations that assay for the presence of mammary precursor cells in either mammary colony-forming cell (Ma-CFC) assay or in 3D Matrigel™-based cultures. Quantifying Ma-CFC frequency provides a functional measure of the number of mammary progenitor cells in the sample, while the 3D morphogenesis assay enables more representative studies of the in vivo mammary duct structure.
