Oncostatin (OSM) is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by activated T cells, monocytes, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells. OSM inhibits the growth of some tumour and normal cell lines, simulates fibroblast, smooth muscle and Kaposi’s sarcoma cell proliferation, cytokine release from endothelial cells and low density lipoprotein receptor expression on hepatoma cells. Human OSM cDNA encodes a 252 amino acid pre-pro-OSM polypeptide with a 25 residue signal peptide and a hydrophilic C-terminal domain that are proteolytically processed to generate the 196 residue mature OSM protein. OSM binds to LIF-Rα-chain and gp130 subunit.
