Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is a member of the nerve growth factor family which includes NT-3, BDNF and NGF. It binds and activates TrkB at the cell surface and in doing so acts a survival factor for certain populations of sensory neurons. However it has also been shown to sensitize cortical neurons to cell death. The mature recombinant NT-4 has a predicted molecular mass of approximately 14 kDa, and is 130 amino acid in length, which is generated by the proteolytic removal of the signal sequence and propeptide. It shares 91% and 95% amino acid a sequence identity with mouse and rat NT-4/5, respectively.
