Human CD8 is expressed either as an αβ heterodimer or an αα homodimer and each chain has a molecular weight of 32-34 kDa. The heterodimer is expressed on the surface of a subset of αβTCR+T cells and on most thymocytes. CD8 homodimers can be expressed on αβ as well as γδ T cells and at a lower density on a subset of NK cells. CD8 acts as a co-receptor with the TcR in MHC I restricted antigen recognition. Clone SK1 recognizes the α chain of CD8.
