CD11b is the αM subunit which combines with CD18 (β2 subunit) to form the integrin Mac-1. CD11b/CD18 is also known as the complement receptor type 3 (CR3), which mediates adhesion to C3bi and ICAM-1 (CD54) and is involved in the transendothelial migration of monocytes and neutrophils. CD11b is expressed at variable levels on monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells, granulocytes and their precursors and on NK cells. CD11b is a relatively late marker for myeloid differentiation and is undetectable on most myelomonocytic hematopoietic progenitor cells and more primitive cells, probably including pluripotent stem cells.
